How passers actually study

More practice. Less passive highlighting.

Most candidates do not fail Praxis because they are "bad at math." They fail because domains are unevenly studied, teaching-task items feel unfamiliar, and retention fades. The fix is a system: active recall, spaced review, and exam-style practice.

Principle 1

Active recall beats re-reading

Close the notes and retrieve: solve, explain a student error, or redraw a graph from memory. That is what Praxis rewards.

Principle 2

Spaced repetition beats cramming

Mark cards Know / Don't know and revisit weak ones at widening intervals. Start serious spacing at least 6–8 weeks before your Praxis date.

Principle 3

Practice like the exam

Praxis 5165 is ~66 selected-response items in 3 hours with an on-screen graphing calculator. Do timed mixed sets, not only topic drills.

Principle 4

Teach the math out loud

About 25% of items are Tasks of Teaching Mathematics — diagnose student work, choose representations, plan next steps. Practice explaining.

Principle 5

Cover all four domains

ALG and FUNC are ~30% each; GEO and STAT are ~20% each. Do not skip geometry/stats because they feel smaller.

A simple weekly rhythm

Aim for roughly 10–25 hours per week depending on your timeline. Consistency beats heroic weekend marathons.

Mon–Tue

Algebra + Number

One ALG topic deep: equations/systems/complex. Then 20 mixed ALG MCQs. Log every miss.

Wed–Thu

Functions + Calculus ideas

Transformations, exponentials, trig, rate-of-change language. Graph → equation → words every session.

Friday

Geometry proof lab

Congruence/similarity criteria + 2 short proofs + coordinate geometry set.

Saturday

Stats & probability

Displays, normal, conditional probability tables, expected value. Then a mixed 20-question timed set.

Sunday

Flashcards + weak-topic surgery

Due cards, death notebook, and one teaching-task practice: rewrite a student solution correctly.

Suggested sequences

If you choose Balanced 8-week

ALG → FUNC → GEO → STAT → MIX

Front-load ALG/FUNC (60% of the exam), then GEO/STAT, then full mixed Praxis-style sets.

If you choose Calc-first (if rusty)

FUNC → ALG → GEO → STAT → MIX

Rebuild functions/calculus language early so later algebra modeling clicks faster.

If you choose Stats-anxious

STAT → ALG → FUNC → GEO → MIX

Knock out probability/stats wording early so it stops stealing mental energy.

Praxis prep does not replace the 30 math credits (12 advanced) NJ requires for CE.

Exam-day mechanics

  • 5165: about 66 selected-response questions, 180 minutes, on-screen graphing calculator provided.
  • NJ passing score for Mathematics CE is currently 159 (confirm on NJDOE testing page before you sit).
  • Flag and move — do not bleed 8 minutes on one algebra marathon.
  • For teaching-task items, ask: what misconception is shown, and what representation would clarify it?
  • Check domain restrictions and units before committing to an answer.
  • Leave 5–8 minutes to revisit flagged items only.
